Identity Proofing
Definition
Process of establishing that a person is who they claim to be, by collecting and verifying identity evidence (government ID, biometric, knowledge-based, address verification). Distinct from authentication: proofing happens once at enrollment, authentication happens repeatedly at access. NIST SP 800-63A IAL levels articulate proofing strength.
